The resident's idea, as submitted
The idea
I want to increase residents’ acceptance of and ultimately generate demand for street tree planting to address heat islands in EJ neighborhoods. To do so, offer $1,000 to EJ community residents/households who successfully request a street tree(s).
Who it helps and why
Boston’s tree ordinance doesn’t protect private trees. Maximizing the urban tree canopy infrastructure on public land is critical to reduce heat islands (and their health effects) in dense residential areas, especially EJ communities that are disproportionately affected. Trees have obvious environmental benefits, but the genesis of this idea is as a health equity and quality of life equity strategy.
