Street toilet stalls in downtown areas

Resident asks for permanent street toilet stalls in busy areas, available outside business hours, to serve pedestrians and unhoused people with more dignity than porta-potties.

The idea

Street toilet stalls. Install a few street toilet stalls in downtown and populated areas so pedestrians and unhoused people have a place to go to the bathroom in these areas regardless of the time of day (outside of business hours).

Who it helps and why

Addressing the entire housing crisis may be a challenge on a limited budget, but providing real bathrooms for people who are unhoused to relieve themselves would be an intermediate measure to give some dignity. Porta-potties are not a long term solution as they are not stable and they are unsanitary (many times I have seen them knocked over, spilling their contents). Street toilet stalls in busy areas would help people passing by or visiting the area as well. Working in a business in Back Bay, I am constantly asked if there is a bathroom and I turn them to a food establishment. Bathrooms should not be only available patrons of restaurants, and the restaurants should not be solely responsible for providing all the public restrooms in an area. Bathrooms should be available and approachable to all.
