The idea
REUSE IT OR LOSE IT! Eco-friendly, free resources, reduces trash on curb. Create free seasonal warehouses for people to drop off or browse furniture/home supplies. No mattresses, clothes, or upholstery. Hire temp pickup crew to load/move big items.
Who it helps and why
Every year during moving season, perfectly viable household goods are put out with the trash: kitchen implements, lamps, tables, bathroom accessories, nightstands, bedframes, desks, dressers, storage boxes... basics that help a person settle in and make good use of their living space. Collecting these items for REUSE IT OR LOSE IT! drop zones would dramatically reduce the toll on our valiant garbage teams during the summer months and provide pilot neighborhoods with free home goods. Our city is wonderful in many ways but there’s no getting around the fact that the high cost of living makes life difficult. A down payment or rental deposit can leave a person house poor, and there are store deserts and peak demand times in the city that can make it hard to find what you need when you need it. This program would help redistribute what already hits the streets every year, to give people all over the city the basic dignity of having what they need to run a household and feel at home. Thank you for considering REUSE IT OR LOSE IT!
